September 2007

I just got back from the Super Sunday breakfast, and it was wonderful to see so many of our Brother Knights step in to help with getting breakfast done. Numerous familiar faces were there, loads of new faces showed up too. It was great to have that many on hand because it made the breakfast flow smoothly and no body ended up feeling over worked, and it was also a great time. So if you haven’t made a Super Sunday breakfast in months or years, or never have been to one, please make an effort to come to the next one and help out any way you can. Even if it’s just to make sure no body takes to many donuts!

If you missed Summerfest you missed a great time and a chance to get to know some of your fellow Brother Knights better. As a fundraiser, this was the best we’ve ever had. Not just in how much money we raised (around $3,300.00) but in how the booth looked as well. There were enough Knights (and family members) to work the booth, and clean up, but also it was a great time to be together. Big thanks to the Summerfest committee!!!!!

Next event will be the installation of Officers on the 19th of September starting with the Mass at 6:30pm, followed by the installation of officers, and ending with a light catered fare in the Parish Family Center. I’m sure this will be a good time for all. All family members are invited. Hope to see you then.

God Bless us all!

Installation of Officers September 19, 2007

At Saint Benedicts Church, in Ridgely.  Bring your family to celebrate the start of our new year.  Father Norm will say Mass at 6:30 pm and the installation of officers will be immediately following.  After the ceremony we will all do to the Family Life Center for food and fellowship.

This will be the 2nd of our social gatherings this year and we're hoping for a large turn out, like our Picnic.  Come introduce your family to our officers and meet their family members as well.  There will be food and drinks for everyone.

We have several new members who will be their with their family's, they are looking forward to meeting all their brother knights.

This Summer Fest exceeded all expectations$

With our new cooker - warmer we were able to cook and prepare TWICE as many beef roast, and our customers didn't let us down.  Our booth took in over $5,600 and our profit, after all bills are paid should be around $3,300 this year.  Our investment in more equipment this year has really paid off for our council and it will be available in our parish kitchen.

The Roast Beef Kitchen Crew

Saturday was the better day for selling sandwiches and the booth was closed by 8:30 pm.  With plenty of beef on hand in the booth all the time we never turned anyone away and there was never a line of more then 4 - 5 people waiting.  This year 545 lbs. of beef was cooked and sold as (estimated at 940) sandwiches.  The kitchen was cleaned and closed each day by late afternoon and we had crews for setting up and closing up the booth.  There was no stress this year as there has been in the past.  It has been suggested we need a sign to designate what we are selling, like a 'Cow';  we'll really have to buy more beef next year!

More then 20 of our knights helped out in the booth or in the kitchen and made this a very successful weekend.  Special thanks to Jeff Parenteau's family for decorating our booth in the theme of the weekend;  they also let us use his office building for the staging area for our supplies and storage.  Since his office was almost directly behind the booth this was very convenient for our council.

No one has supplied a roster of all the knights who helped work this project;  I hear many of you showed up and gave someone a break for a few hours.  Everyone who participated in this years Summer Fest, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated.  It is Saint Joan of Arc's knights as a team that made our program so successful!

Of course having perfect 80˚ weather for this weekend didn't hurt any either.

Saint Joan's will consider having a Roast Beef - Oyster Dinner

In an effort to replace the money we spent on equipment for the Summer Fest, we are working on plans for a parish Dinner.  There is no set date yet, but it could happen late this year or early 2008.  Since we now have the equipment and know-how we can offer a dinner at a reasonable price.

Roast Beef and Oysters with all the trimmings is our suggested menu and it will be on a Saturday Night so we can as many parishioners to join in as possible.  If you have any ideas or suggestions for this project, or if you want to be involved, contact Grand Knight Chris Spinner.

Fall is the time of our special fund raising programs, the "New Car Raffle" and the "Tootsie Roll Giveaway".  Each of these programs has a special goal and we need volunteers to make them a success.

The New Car Raffle is the Maryland State Project that raises money for their Scholarship Program, Emergency Fund and other incidental needs that appear every year.  Our council keeps 40% of all monies raised in the Car Raffle.

The Tootsie Roll Giveaway is our program to collect donations for our Special Education Award given each year to a local school's program for their handicapped children.  Last year our check for $840.00 went to Lockerman Middle School for their Special Ed. Program.  In past years our donation money has gone to the Benedictine School and Denton and Ridgely Elementary.

Our Parish Super Sunday - It's back!

September 9 was our first Supper Sunday Breakfast, and we did "Good";  maybe even better than good.  I don't know how many parishioners attended, but some of them had to eat in the class rooms.

Our knights turned out in force to work in the kitchen, on the line and cleaning up.  There were the same old faces in there pitching food;  but, there were many new faces scrubbing pans, passing out food and generally helping out any they could.  This is truly a team effort and I am sure the Parish recognizes how well we serve the parish.

Father Norm was around to encourage us since he had a volunteer to say the 8:30 Mass.  If you thought the Priest looked familiar it was because he is the brother of our own 4th Degree Knight Dan Tuel, from Denton.  Father Tuel was hard to pick out in the FLC at breakfast, he had forgotten to bring his 'collar'.

We are still searching for new members!

With the beginning of a new year, and new officers, we are searching for 5-6 new men to fill our ranks as knights.  The more members we have the more we can do for our parish, and our community.

There will be another 1st Degree Ceremony soon!  Do you know someone who is interested in becoming a Knight of Columbus?

ALSO

There will be a 2nd Degree Ceremony in Easton, at the Regina Coeli Council Hall, some time in October.  Our District Deputy, John Smith is canvassing for members to start a 2nd Degree Team here on the shore.  He thinks St. Joan's would be ideally suited since we are i the middle of the 'shore'.

If there is enough interest it would be a great benefit to us and certainly help in recruiting and moving our members into the 3rd Degree.  Contact Chris Spinner or Donny Gallagher for information.
