The  Beloved  son  of  the  Father  becomes  passive.
In  the  episode  that  follows  we  are  struck  by  his
total willingness to be moved by the Breath of God
and to be tested by the Devil (whose name means
“Accuser”).    Once  his  intimate  identity  as  Son  of
God  has  been  established  at  the  Jordan  by  the
direct  witness  of  the  Holy  Trinity;  we  are  now
shown  how  a  Divine Person behaves in the fallen
world  of  mutability  and  ambiguity,  conditioned  by
sin.    From  the  two episodes together (the baptism
and    the    temptation)    will    emerge    the   diptych

the heart of man, the depths of Jordan’s waters where demoniac monsters were thought
to lurk, and the desert, where only a saint or
of the world, the lord of the earthly minded who proposes disruption of the divine order
at every step, Christ is the divine Hero who comes to confront Satan’s logic with stout
clear-headedness  and  humility.    The  desert  offers  an  occasion  for  two  diametrically
opposed solutions to the plight of man: either capitulation to the comforts of the satanic
attitude  –
The desert is the place of utter poverty and therefore, potentially, of heroic trust in God.
A Hassidic rabbi, Moshe Loeb, once said: “How easy it is for a poor man to trust in God!
In what else is he to trust?  And how difficult it is for a rich man to trust in God!  All his
possessions are crying out to him:  “Trust in me!”

When man experiences his own barrenness, when he is most in need, then is the time
of  the  decisive  crises.    Will  he  accept  easy  immediate  remedies  and  compromise  his
vocation  as a child of God, or will he wait in silence and privation, fasting from all the
world  has  to  offer for the perfect length of God’s pleasure –
days and nights that recapitulate Israel’s historical wandering in the desert?  Here, too,
the  Lord  Jesus  continues  his  self-identification  with  the  experience  of  the  historical
Israel.    Having  spent  his  babyhood  in  Egypt  –
symbolizing the birth of Israel as God’s chosen people –
the test of his faith in his Father.  His entrance into Jerusalem for the final Passover of
the Cross will signal the opening  of the true Promised  Land.

We  have  seen  that,  at  the  baptism,  Christ  called  down  the  audible  presence  of  the
Father  and  the  visible  presence  of  the  Spirit  simply  by  what  he  is:  the  obedient Son
inaugurating  his  mission  at  the  Jordan.    Likewise,  this  same  identity,  present  in  our
midst,  conjures  up  the  presence  of the Accuser, forever watching to put obstacles in
man’s path to God.  The Spirit led Jesus into the desert specifically “in order to be tested
by   the   Devil”.   But,   while   Christ   is   led   by   God’s   Spirit   –
overshadowed  Mary,  thus  bringing  the  eternal  Son  into  her  womb  –

Father. The Devil is the “prime mover” of the plot here, because in the world he is most
insistently and actively at work when trying to overturn the firmness of the good, while

VOCATION REFLECTIONS
Today’s  first  reading  reminds us that Adam and
Eve chose not to follow God’s will for them, even
though they knew what it was.  So often we want
to  cooperate  with  God’s  plan,  if  only  we could
discern  it.  Might He be calling you to serve the
Church  as  a  priest,  deacon,  religious  sister  or
religious  brother?    If  you  think  so,  call or write
