Procedures for Cantors
1
Arrive 20 minutes before mass and sign in
– earlier if practice is needed.
NO PRACTICE 20 minutes before mass.
2
Check to make sure that the hymn numbers are on the board
and that they are correct. Communicate any changes to the priest/presider.
3
Look for the priest’s/presider’s signal from the entrance of the church to begin,
at which time any announcements in regard to music are made
and the welcome and introduction are done from the provided script.
Invite the assembly to join in singing the Gathering Hymn
by announcing it by number and title and repeat number.
4
Throughout the liturgy, it is important that you lead the assembly in song –
including the responses. You will need to be at the microphone prior to the
beginning of each response.
If two people are cantoring,
only one should lead the assembly in the responses.
5
After the First Reading,
count to 15, and then approach the ambo
carrying the music needed in an appropriate folder and
stopping at the center of the altar making a profound bow.
6
Proclaim the psalm as the Word of God.
7
Return to your seat taking your music with you.
(Do not stop to bow and reverence the altar).
8
After the Second Reading,
wait for the priest/presider to stand
as the signal to begin the Gospel Acclamation (Alleluia)
9
Following the Prayer of the Faithful,
remind the assembly of what the second collection is for, if there is one,
and then announce the offertory hymn by number, title and repeat number.
10
During the Eucharistic Prayer,
lead the assembly in the acclamations if they are sung,
and through your posture and attentiveness,
communicate a focus and reverence towards the altar.
11
To receive communion do not come into the sanctuary.
When the priest comes to distribute communion to the assembly,
be the first to approach the sacrament.
You are encouraged to receive both species
as a good model for the rest of the assembly, however, it is not required.
If you choose to receive the Blood of Christ,
approach the deacon, or first minister,
and return to your seat by going behind the priest/presider.
12
Immediately after receiving communion,
return to the microphone and begin the communion hymn
only announcing the number.
There should be singing or instrumental music
until the entire assembly has received communion.
13
At the conclusion of the mass,
announce the closing hymn by number, title and repeat number.
